The Finance Minister says the salaries paid to top Irish bankers are "ridiculous" and he has pledged to deal with them in the coming weeks.

Michael Noonan also hit out at Fianna Fail who he said put in place many of the arrangements which they are now criticising.

He was responding to questions from Michael McGrath of Fianna Fail about high salaries paid to top Irish bankers.

He also hit out in the high salaries at the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation - formally Anglo Irish Bank - who has refused to reduce pay despite being requested to do so by him.

He said there would be further correspondence with the State-owned bank once a review of salaries ordered by him is complete.

But Michael Noonan says his hands are tied with some contracts negotiated by the previous government.

He says since he took office last year he has not allowed a single breach of the €500,000 pay cap.

And Minister Noonan says Fianna Fáil"s Michael McGrath should be pointing the finger of blame at himself.

"They"re Fianna Fail arrangements - I"ll wind them down if I can, and I"m just as angry with what I inherited" he said.

"But he"s like the boy who"s family burned the building, and he"s around the street shouting "who"s going to put out the fire, who"s going to put out the fire?" - it was your own crowd (that) burned it".

"So you shouldn"t be pointing the finger of blame at your successors".

In relation to the pay of top bankers the Minister said "It"s far too high, it"s ridiculous - with what some families have to survive on, and the kind of pay packages that were put in place".

"I"ll have a report on that review at the end of this year, and I will act on it" he added.
