There was no major drop in traffic volumes leaving Irish cities this evening, despite the changes to work from home rules.

From today, people are advised to work from home unless it is absolutely necessary to be in the office.

The change is one of a number of measures announced earlier this week in response to high COVID figures.

Bauer Media Ireland Traffic and Travel Coordinator Niamh O’Reilly said we could see an impact form the new rules next week.

“Delays typically start earlier on a Friday evening and taper off by 5:30ish depending on whether there are incidents or not,” she said.

“Overall, there has been no huge change today since the working from home recommendation was made but next week might tell a different story.”

She said this morning saw the “usual delays on routes heading into cities and some national routes where roadworks are taking place.”

Earlier this week the Government also announced a new midnight curfew for bars, restaurants and night clubs as well as an extension of the use of COVID certs to cinemas and theatres.

Meanwhile, updates to close contact rules mean that whenever a confirmed COVID case is recorded in a household, everyone living in the house will have to stay at home and restrict their movements for at least five days.
