Nissan Ireland has announced that they are welcoming applicants to their nationwide apprenticeship scheme - Nissan Generation Next Apprenticeship Academy. The manufacturer aims to create 100 new jobs in the industry over the next four years. The application process is open to anyone who has an interest in working in the motor industry, provided they are over sixteen.

James McCarthy, Chief Executive of Nissan Ireland spoke to Bobby Kerr this morning on Business Breakfast. Their intention over the next four years is to employ 25 apprentices per year over the next four years. The motivation for this scheme according to Mr McCarthy "is a requirement to future-proof the industry". Technology in cars has changed dramatically over the last decade and our future mechanics will now need to focus on being educated to this regard.

The application process will be open until March 9th. The scheme will give candidates a chance to learn about the amazing technologies which are currently in use in modern vehicles. Those who attain a place will take part in the 7-phase SOLAS Motor Apprenticeship programme. As part of the scheme they will take part in off-site training and will receive placement in a Nissan Dealer Network.

“We are introducing this scheme to tackle the identified short to medium term, skilled labour shortage in our industry,” said McCarthy at the launch of the scheme. “With the increase of car buyers choosing new cars for their value, economy, safety and environmental merits, the days of the gifted amateur are over; we need to future-proof Nissan Ireland’s technical staff to have technicians as highly trained as our cars technology demands. Over the next four years, we see opportunities for up to 100 full time jobs for trained technicians”.

If you’re interested in this scheme more information can be attained through contacting Nissan Ireland at generationnext@nissan.ie.
