Nine people have been arrested following an investigation into the illegal coursing of hares in Co Tipperary.

A number of "Lurcher" breed dogs have also been seized along with equipment.

The arrests were made as part of a large-scale joint operation by gardaí and members of the National Parks and Wildlife Service at a number of locations.

Those arrested are being held at Cahir, Thurles, Tipperary, Templemore and Clonmel Garda stations.

Gardaí say the operation targeted people who illegally trespass on lands with Lurcher dogs and engage in offences under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013, carrying a penalty of up to five years imprisonment on indictment.

Anybody with information on this or any other case is being asked to contact Thurles Garda Station at 05-042-5100, their local Garda station, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.
