A newborn baby girl has been found dead in the women's toilets at an Amazon warehouse in the US.

Emergency services in Phoenix, Arizona were called to the facility on Wednesday evening.

The city's fire department confirmed that the child was deceased.

Police said it appeared the baby was full-term.

Speaking to reporters, Sgt Vince Lewis of Phoenix police said: "We have located and spoken with the mother. She will not be identified at this time.

"She is cooperating with investigators."

He noted that the body appears to have only been there since "fairly recent... same day".

Amazon described the incident as "terribly sad and tragic", adding that it's working with investigators.

The Amazon distribution centre is located on the southwest side of Phoenix, and the company employs thousands of people in the city.
