A new campaign has been launched calling for the government to enact abortion legislation for the 'X Case'.

The 10 Days of Abortion Rights Action will take place during the first 10 days of March.

Tens of thousands of postcards will be sent to TDs, asking them to support the introduction of the legislation.

A new campaign aims to bombard politicians with postcards, calling for the introduction of new abortion laws.

Pro-choice groups want the government to legislate for the X Case before the Dail takes its summer break.

Savita case 'shocked people out of complacency'

Earlier this month the Taoiseach indicated that abortion legislation was at an advanced stage.

In January the Minister for Health said strict new laws surrounding medical terminations would by in place by the summer.

However the government told The Irish Times last month that a Bill definitely will not be ready by Easter.

This post card campaign follows researched released last week by pro-life groups, which claims that there is not broad support for abortion in Ireland.

Spokesperson for the Abortion Rights Campaign is Rachel Donnelly of Galway Pro-Choice.

She says the death of Savita Halapannavar at Galway University Hospital has forced many people into action.

"Even before with the X Case in 1992 it was another extreme and shocking case that really showed people what needed to happen, and why we need to have abortions in cases where a woman's life is at risk" she said.

"So yeah, I think the Savita case definitely shocked a lot of people out of complacency on the abortion issue" she added.
