The President of South Africa says Nelson Mandela remains in a critical condition but is now stable.

President Jacob Zuma visited the former South African President in hospital in Pretoria yesterday and was informed by the medical team that his condition has improved during the course of the night and he is stable.

President Jacob Zuma cancelled his visit to Mozambique yesterday.

In a statement on President Jacob Zuma's website he says the Presidency is appealing for privacy and dignity for the former President at this time.
