NASA reestablishes contact with International Space Station

NASA says communications have been restored with the International Space Station, having been lost for a time earlier.

It happened as flight controllers in Houston were updating the software on-board the station when one of the data relay systems malfunctioned.

In a statement, NASA said "The primary computer that controls critical station functions defaulted to a backup computer, but was not allowing the station to communicate with NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellites".

It says Mission Control was able to communicate with the crew through Russian ground stations as it flew over them before 11:00 a.m. EST.

They were told to connect to a back-up computer.

Expedition 34 Commander Kevin Ford reported that the station’s status was fine and that the crew was doing well.
