Ever wanted to go into space? Well this could be your chance.

NASA is making a push to get to Mars, and is looking for astronauts to join them.

But NASA says from the thousands of applications received, only a few are chosen for its intensive astronaut candidate training program.

Only 338 astronauts have been selected since 1959.

"The astronauts of the 21st century will continue to work aboard the International Space Station in cooperation with our international partners; help to build and fly a new NASA vehicle, the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) designed for human deep space exploration; and further NASA’s efforts to partner with industry to provide a commercial capability for space transportation to the space station", NASA says.

While applicants must be citizens of the United States, those with US dual-citizenship are also eligible.

The window of application will close in February 2016.

The space body already has a timeline of when they want their new astronauts to be space-ready:

  • February-September 2016: Qualified Applications reviewed to determine Highly Qualified applicants. Qualifications Inquiry form sent to Supervisors/References and civilian applicants contacted by mail to obtain an FAA medical exam
  • October-December 2016: Highly Qualified applications reviewed to determine Interviewees
  • February-April 2017: Interviewees brought to Johnson Space Centre for initial interview, medical evaluation, and orientation. Interviewees will be selected from the Highly Qualified group and contacted on a week-by-week basis.
  • May 2017: Finalists determined
  • June 2017: Astronaut Candidate Class of 2015 announced
  • August 2017: Astronaut Candidate Class of 2015 reports to the Johnson Space Centre
