The US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said a meeting with President Donald Trump on talks to restart the government was "a set up".

She pushed back against President Trump's account of their meeting on Wednesday.

The brief talks were meant to break the impasse over border security and end the US government shutdown.

Instead, Mr Trump walked out after only a few minutes - claiming it was "a total waste of time".

Mr Trump is continuing to demand around €5bn in federal funding to build a wall along the southern border.

The dispute has seen the US government in partial shutdown for nearly three weeks.

This has affected approximately 800,000 federal workers - some 380,000 have been told to stay home, and 420,000 are working without pay.

On Thursday, Ms Pelosi said Mr Trump had not told the truth.

"Not only was the president unpresidential - surprise, surprise - yesterday in his beahaviour, I think the meeting was a set up so he could walk out."

"As I said to him yesterday, 'These people cannot go to their fathers to cover their payments, their cost'".

She said Mr Trump asked for funding for the border wall, and that was what she rejected.

"But the fact is is that what the president is proposing is not the best way to protect our borders.

"And I want to correct the record: he has not told the truth when he said he asked me if in 30 days I would support border security and I said no.

"He knows, the people in the room know, that that was not what happened.

"What he said (was) 'In 30 days will you support a wall' and I said 'no' - he went out and said something completely different".

"He knows we all support border security, and that there's a better way to do it".

"I don't even know if the president wants the wall, I think he wants a debate on the wall", she added.
