A motorcyclist has died in a crash in County Offaly.

Gardaí said the single-vehicle collision happened at around 6:45pm last night on the R457 at Mulaghtour in Belmont, County Offaly.

The man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore.

The road remains closed this morning while Gardaí carry out a forensic examination.

Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and are particularly interested in talking to people who were travelling in the area at the time and may have camera footage.

A Post-mortem will take place in due course.
