It has emerged that the mother of six children who were hit by a car on their way to school in County Antrim this morning had raised concerns about the safety of her school run.

One of her children, eight-year-old Adam Gilmour, was killed in the accident near the village of Cloughmills.

The other children are stable or have been discharged from hospital - one was not injured.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the crash.

Her local MLA Jim Allister had written to the Education Board to request transport for the family on the 20th of October.

He says the woman feared for her children's lives on the road.

“The school bus was refusing to come up their road to pick them up.

“In consequence she was required to walk six children, including one in the buggy, every morning coming into the winter time

“Down a narrow country road with no footpaths and no lighting.

“She said to me, ‘One morning we’re going to be wiped out’, ad sadly that’s the essence of what happened,” Allister said.
