A woman whose son was killed when an Air France jet plunged into the Atlantic Ocean has been awarded damages of €67,000 by the High Court in Dublin.

The only child of Lidia Ivanova - Maksim - was aboard a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris that ran into stormy weather and crashed killing 228 people, including three Irish doctors on June 1st 2009.

The Estonian national (25) worked for Aer Lingus and was living with friends in Swords, Dublin at the time of the disaster.

Air France admitted it was liable for his death and paid his mother Ms. Ivanova, €17,600 compensation prior to today's award.

The €67,000 in damages are for mental distress and to acknowledge that Ms. Ivanova (54) - an Aer Lingus ground operative - will no longer have her son's support on a financial and day-to-day level.

Ms. Justice Mary Irvine said it was clear from the evidence that Lidia Ivanova 'has not yet come to terms with the death of her only child to whom she appears to have been absolutely devoted'.
