Morning top 5: Talks aimed at averting nurses' strike to get underway; search for missing footballer's plane to resume

Representatives from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation are to meet with the HSE this afternoon.

The talks at the Workplace Relations Commission are aimed at averting planned strike action - the first day of which is due to take place a week from today.

The union says that low levels of pay have left the public health service unable to recruit and retain enough nurses and midwives to safely care for patients.

Rescue workers are expected to resume their search for a plane carrying Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala this morning.

His light aircraft disappeared over the English Channel on Monday night, after leaving Nantes in France.

A search yesterday turned up a number of floating objects but no firm trace of those onboard.

There are fresh concerns about the border situation in Ireland if Brexit happens without a deal being agreed.

Reports from a private meeting with opposition parties last night suggest Leo Varadkar said the EU could move control of any border away from Ireland and onto the continent in no deal scenario.

Tánaiste Simon Coveney yesterday admitted it will be “very difficult” to prevent a return to a hard border in Ireland if the UK crashes out of the EU without a deal.

He was speaking after the European Commission’s chief spokesman said it was “pretty obvious” that a hard Brexit will lead to a hard border in Ireland.

Gardaí in Cork have detained three men overnight relation to the murder of Polish man Mikolaj Wilk.

They were arrested yesterday in the Ballincollig area during a series of searches.

Mr Wilk was killed last June in an brutal attack at his home in Ballincollig.

A number of armed men were involved in the assault, in which his wife also received injuries.

Dublin City Council has been urged to provide out of hours support for homeless families.

Inner City Helping Homeless says some families are being sent to Garda stations to prove their identity if they become homeless outside office hours.

Previously a team from the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive was on call to help such families, face-to-face.
