Morning top 5: Speculation grows over possible February election

There is growing speculation the Taoiseach could announce a date for a general election in the coming days.

A number of reports this morning suggest February 7th could be the day the country goes to the polls.

Independent TD Michael Healy Rae, meanwhile, said he believes a planned a confidence vote in Health Minister Simon Harris next month won't go ahead as the Taoiseach will realise "there has to be an election now".

Protesters have gathered in the Iranian capital Tehran, after authorities there admitted to 'unintentionally' shooting down a Ukrainian passenger plane on Wednesday.

Reports from Iran said demonstrations were held at two universities, with videos shared online appearing to show tear gas being used as protesters clashed with police.

US President Donald Trump tweeted several messages in support of the demonstrators, saying that he was 'inspired by their courage'.

The second storm of the season's expected to bring gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour when it hits the country tomorrow.

Met Éireann has issued two status orange wind warnings ahead of Storm Brendan.

They cover all southern and western coastal counties from 7am, with the last expiring by midnight.

Scott Morrison has been criticised over his personal reaction to the disaster, and he has acknowledged there are things he could have handled "much better".

Gardaí are appealing for information after a person was hospitalised in a crash in west Dublin.

It happened on the Lower Lucan Road at 11.30am yesterday morning.

The sole occupant of the car was serious injured in the incident.
