A secondary school in Dublin is to be shut down for two weeks as a precaution after being linked to the Republic's first coronavirus patient.

A male developed symptoms after returning from a trip to northern Italy and was confirmed as Ireland's first case on Saturday.

Parents at the school have been told to isolate children from the rest of their family if they develop symptoms.

In the UK, Boris Johnson says there's "little doubt" rising coronavirus cases "will present a significant challenge".

He will chair an emergency COBRA meeting of ministers and health officials later, after the number of British cases hit 36.

That includes the first case in Scotland, which was confirmed last night.

In the US, Democratic candidate Pete Buttigieg has ended his bid for the White House.

The former two-term mayor of South Bend in Indiana said he could no longer be part of the Democratic nomination process.

Despite a victory in Iowa last month in the first state caucuses, he came in fourth on Saturday in South Carolina.

His decision to drop out of the race came less than 48 hours before 'Super Tuesday' tomorrow, which will see Democrats in more than a dozen states and territories vote for their preferred candidate.

Three women are due in court this morning after drugs worth €455,000 were seized in Dublin.

Heroin worth €175,000 and cocaine worth €70,000 were seized during the search of a car in Ballyfermot on Friday.

Two women aged 18 and 22 were arrested, along with a 17-year-old boy who was released without charge.

More heroin and cocaine was found during a follow-up search in the Dublin 7 area in the early hours of Saturday, and an 18-year-old woman was arrested.

There is a call on the Government to take in an extra €2.5 billion to €3 billion per year in taxation.

Social Justice Ireland is putting forward the new tax take target, in its Socio-Economic Review released today.

It says to tackle housing, healthcare, childcare and public transport, Ireland's tax-take must increase gradually towards the European average.
