Thousands of people across the UK last night took part in protests against Boris Johnson's plans to suspend parliament, with more demonstrations expected later.

The British prime minister insisted the move will allow him to set out his new programme for government - and denies it's aimed at blocking attempts to halt a no-deal Brexit.

More than 1.1 million people have now signed a petition opposing parliament being prorogued or dissolved.
