A massive police operation is taking place in northern Paris where a number of suspects involved in Friday's attacks - including the mastermind - are thought to be under siege.

Shots have been fired and explosions have been heard, and residents have been asked to stay indoors.

At least one man is dead and a number of police officers have been injured.

Two Air France flights heading from the US to Paris have landed safely after being diverted following anonymous bomb threats.

One, from Washington DC, was sent to Halifax in Canada.

The other was diverted to Salt Lake City after leaving Los Angeles.

The health minister says Universal Health Insurance will not now be introduced until at least a third term of the current government.

Leo Varadkar was responding to analysis by the ESRI that shows that the government's model could cost the state up to €2 billion a year to run.

The minister says that model is simply too expensive - so other forms of insurance will have to be designed instead.

Thousands were without power overnight, as adverse weather conditions damaged parts of the ESB network.

Around 25,000 customers could be without power until around 6pm this evening.

The areas worst affected by the power cuts are parts of the midlands and the east.

New Zealand rugby union legend Jonah Lomu has died suddenly at the age of 40.

His family has told reporters his death was "totally unexpected", but he had been dealing with a serious kidney condition.

Lomu's impressive career really took off in 1995 when he scored four tries against England in the semi-finals of the World Cup.
