Eight men discovered on a cargo ship en route to Ireland yesterday are believed to be in good health.

The men, believed to be from Eastern Europe, were found on board a ship travelling to Waterford from France.

It is believed one of them made themselves known to crewmembers who contacted the captain.

They are being processed under Irish immigration laws.

A number of flights out of Ireland have been cancelled due to a major transport strike in France.

Public sector workers, air traffic controllers and rail workers are among those downing tools for what is expected to be the biggest strike of its kind in France in decades.

The row centres on President Emmanuel Macron’s plans for reforming the country’s pensions system.

Irish airlines are advising customers to check their flights with thousands of passengers set to be affected.

The FAI has postponed the publication of its annual accounts.

The accounts are expected to include details of the severance package paid to former CEO John Delaney.

State funding to the association has been suspended since it emerged Mr Delaney gave the association a €100,000 bridging loan from his own pocket in 2017.

Last week, a forensic audit of the association’s accounts was referred to Gardaí.

Yesterday, Three Ireland confirmed it would not be renewing its sponsorship deal with the association which ends in July next year.

Almost 17,000 people sought help from the Simon Communities of Ireland last year.

That's a 26% increase on the previous 12 months.

The homeless charity's annual report for 2018 shows 5,263 people accessed their housing supports, a 57% increase on 2017.

The numbers accessing their emergency accommodation also increased by 80% to 1,738.
