Former Fianna Fáil government minister Pat Carey is to step down as Director of Elections for Fianna Fáil following "unfounded" speculation in the media.
Mr Carey was only appointed as Director of Elections last month.
In a statement released through his solicitors last night, Mr Carey says he does not know if allegations about sexual abuse carried in The Irish Independent this week relate to him.

A wind warning remains in place this morning as Storm Abigail sweeps the country.
The yellow weather alert will remain in place until at least 9 O'clock tonight, with winds expected to reach 90 kilometres per hour in some parts.
Yesterday some flights leaving Dublin airport were cancelled as a result of the strong winds. Some ferries were also affected.

Legal action has been launched in the US by the parents of the victims and survivors of the Berkeley balcony collapse.
Six students died and seven were injured when the balcony gave way in June, because the joists supporting it had suffered severe dry rot due to water damage.
The Irish Times reports legal actions have been filed in California against 35 named defendants seeking punitive damages.

The jury in the trial of a woman accused of murdering an elderly man in Dublin last year will begin their deliberations today.
Sabrina Cummins (37) of Ringsend Park, Dublin 4 admits to punching and kicking Thomas Horan (63) but denies murder.
Today the jurors could acquit Sabrina, find her guilty of murder or convict her of the lesser charge of manslaughter.
