It cost more than €786,000 to send the Taoiseach and other ministers around the world in private aircrafts last year.

There were 46 trips on the government jet, and three journeys on the lighter Casa plane.

The most expensive was Leo Varadkar's two-day journey to Egypt last February for the EU-Arab summit, which cost the €52,200.

It is understood Britain's Queen Elizabeth II was not warned about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's intentions to announce that they are stepping back as senior members of the royal family.

The couple say they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

Buckingham Palace released a statement shortly afterwards - saying that these are complicated issued that will take time to work through.

The Sports Minister Shane Ross is welcoming the appointment of three independent directors to the board of the FAI.

The crisis-hit organisation confirmed Goodbody Stockbrokers MD Roy Barrett as its independent chairperson on Wednesday.

Two other independent directors were also appointed.

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and the Fianna Fáil leader Michael Martin will meet later to discuss when a general election takes place.

Mr Varadkar wants it to be fixed for May, but Micheal Martin is pushing for a date in April.

The two leaders have exchanged letters on the subject, ahead of a private meeting this evening.

The US says it is ready to take part in "serious negotiations" with Iran.

The country also claimed the killing of Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani was an act of self defence.

In a letter to the UN Security Council, the US also vowed to take additional action "as necessary" in the Middle East to protect its personnel and interests.
