A garda has died after a shooting in County Roscommon overnight.

It is understood he was shot shortly before midnight in Castlerea town centre.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries and died there this morning.

A man in his 40s has been arrested and taken to Castlerea Garda Station.

Ireland will take up its seat on the UN Security Council in January.

The country beat off competition from Canada to claim the seat in a vote at Un Headquarters in New York last night.

It comes after a campaign that involved U2 and Riverdance and cost nearly €850,000.

Pubs that reopen at the end of the month will have to limit customers to 105 minutes of seating time.

Fáilte Ireland has issued finalised guidelines for pubs that plan to reopen as restaurants on June 29th.

Customers will have to pre-book their timeslot and pubs will have 15 minutes between bookings to clean tables and allow customers to enter and leave.

People from different households sitting at the same table must observe physical distancing of one-metre, while there should be two metres between tables of people from different homes.

He also claims the US president had a willingness to stop criminal investigations into dictators he liked.

Nearly four times as many drugs were seized at Ireland's mail centres last year compared to 2018.

Another €1.4 million worth of substances were recovered in the first four months of this year.

These new figures have been released to Newstalk by Revenue under the Freedom of Information Act.

They show a dramatic increase in the value of drugs seized at An Post's mail four centres - Athlone, Portlaoise, Cork and Dublin.
