Around 8,000 people - many of them refugees from Syria and Iraq - have arrived in Germany following grueling journeys by foot, bus and train.

Many had been stuck in Hungary, until officials there allowed people to leave the country and travel across the border into Austria.

The LÉ Niamh is due to land at Pozzallo in Sicily after rescuing 329 refugees in the Mediterranean yesterday.

In total the crew has now rescued 3 thousand 343 migrants since commencing its operations in the Mediterranean.

A female Garda is recovering at St James' Hospital in Dublin after her patrol car was rammed by a stolen car yesterday afternoon.

Three men were arrested at the scene in Ballyfermot - one in his late teens - the others in their twenties.

Two appeared in court last night, all have been relesed on bail.

The female officer is said to have suffered non life threatening injuries.

The British government says it's considering using laws to enforce changes to welfare in Northern Ireland - if the parties at Stormont can't come to an agreement.

Unionists support some cuts but Sinn Féin and the SDLP oppose the reforms - including replacing housing benefit and support for the disabled.

Negotiations about the changes are due to begin at Stormont next week.

Six people have been killed in a crash at a car rally in north western Spain.

Some 16 others were also injured in the accident at the Coruna race.

Spanish media are reporting that two pregnant women and an 8 year old child are among the victims. Police say the car had been going too fast.

Hurling fans going to the All Ireland final in Croke Park this afternoon are advised to use public transport.

Galway face Tipperary in the Minor Championship Final, while Kilkenny will take on Galway in the Senior match.

Drivers are warned to expect delays in the area surrounding Croke Park.

A full Garda cordon will be in place two hours prior to stiles opening and for one hour after the event.
