EU ministers to gather for extraordinary meeting to discuss immigration crisis

EU ministers will gather for an extraordinary meeting in two weeks' time to discuss how to tackle the refugee crisis which has reached "unprecedented proportions".

The increasing number of people who have died travelling from conflict-hit countries to Europe by land and at sea has forced governments to respond.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has again urged other European Union countries to accept a greater share of the refugees.

Government social housing plans "nowhere near" what's needed

The government's social housing plans go 'nowhere near' what's needed to address Ireland's homelessness crisis.

That is the warning from Social Justice Ireland, which is publishing its annual report today.

The group is also highlighting figures which estimate that by 2031, almost one million people in Ireland will be over the age of 65, and better resources and facilities must be put in place for Ireland's future elderly citizens.

Pair to appear in court charged in connection with stolen car hitting garda

A man and woman are due to appear in court this morning this charged in relation to an incident in Dublin, which left a Garda seriously injured.

The officer has suffered hip and leg injuries after being hit by a stolen car at around 11 o'clock on Saturday night in Balbriggan.

He is receiving treatment at Beaumont Hospital.

Wes Craven dies, age 76

Wes Craven, the famed film director has died at his home in Los Angeles.

The 76-year-old had been battling brain cancer.

He was best known for creating some of the best known and loved films of the horror genre in recent decades, including "A Nightmare On Elm Street" and the "Scream" movies.
