Two of Europe's largest airlines have announced they will stop flying over the Sinai peninsular following the crash of a Russian plane.

Lufthansa and Air France say they won't operate there until it is known what caused the jet to come down.

Militants linked to Islamic State have claimed they targeted the aircraft killing all 224 people on board - although that has been dismissed by both Egypt and Russia.

The wife of the co-pilot has told state TV he had complained about the aircraft's condition.

It was a busy Halloween night for fire services around the country.

The Dublin Fire Brigade alone says it attended 193 bonfires.

One of its ambulances was hit with a bottle on a call-out on the city's North side.

No crew members were hurt during the incident.

A man is in a critical condition after being stabbed at a bonfire in Blanchardstown, Dublin.

At about 7.30pm last night emergency services were called to a bonfire at Drumheath in Blanchardstown.

There they found a man with serious stab injuries.

He was rushed to the nearby James Connolly Hospital - where his condition is described as critical.

Three men remain in custody in Limerick this morning after they were arrested in connection with dissident republican activity.

The men who are aged in their mid 20s to late 30s were arrested after two cars were stopped and searched at Kyletaun in Rathkeale in the early hours of yesterday morning.

It is part of ongoing investigations into dissident republican activity by gardaí from the Special Detective Unit assisted by members of the Emergency Response Unit.
