Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said the Government will not be afraid to reintroduce coronavirus restrictions if there is a second wave of the virus.

It comes after major changes to the exit pathway with most of normal life able to resume from June 29th.

Pubs, restaurants, gyms, cinemas, hairdressers and barbers will be among those allowed to re-open early.

A 43-year-old man has been charged in connection to the murder of Detective Garda Colm Horkan.

Stephen Silver of Aughaward, Foxford in Co Mayo appeared before a special sitting of Castlerea District Court on Firday night.

The officer died after a violent incident in the town on Wednesday night.

The head of the World Health Organisation (WHO) says the coronavirus pandemic is "accelerating" globally.

More than 150,000 cases have been reported in a single day - that is a record number.

Most of the new infections were in the Americas, South Asia and the Middle East.

A ban on rent increases and evictions due to COVID-19 has been extended until July 20th.

The restriction on landlords, brought in during March was due to run out at the end of June.

However there are fears it may not be of much help to many people who are still without work across the country.

SIPTU want an urgent meeting with management at Aer Lingus after the announcement it plans to lay off 500 staff.

The airline says the job losses are due to COVID-19, which it says is having a catastrophic effect on the aviation industry.

On Fridau, the Transport Minister Shane Ross urged both the unions and the company to engage in constructive talks.
