Gardaí have confirmed that a senior officer has been suspended from duty.

The officer is the subject of an ongoing investigation by Garda watchdog GSOC.

Last night, a Garda spokesperson said that as an ongoing investigation is underway, adding they will be making no further comment nor commenting on the officer's identity.

The purchase of single use plastic cups, cutlery and straws is to stop in all Government departments, public bodies and schools by the end of March this year.

Environment Minister Richard Bruton has confirmed the Government's intention to reduce single use plastics in Ireland.
