Pope Francis travels to Lesbos to witness scale of Europe's migration crisis

The island is home to thousands of migrants who have crossed the Aegean Sea from Turkey, a journey which has claimed a growing number of lives

Lesbos has also seen a number of protests taking place after an EU deal agreed last month to ease the migration crisis started deportations from the islands of Lesbos, Samos and Kos

Early Childhood Ireland report to highlight cost of childcare in Ireland

Early Childhood Ireland have released the key findings of their latest survey at a conference in Dublin.

It comes on foot of the second free preschool year and the introduction of rolling enrolment, as announced in the last budget.

Of the 700 members surveyed, 35% said they would expand to accommodate more children.

At least 19 people dead after major earthquake hits Japan

An earthquake has hit the southern Japanese city of Kumamoto, according to scientists, the second major quake to strike the area in two days.

NHK TV reported that 760 people have been admitted to hospital following the latest tremors, and almost 200,000 homes are without power, while drinking water systems have failed.

It's now 50 days since the General Election, the longest time on record it's taken to form a Government.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil will maintain contact this weekend following constructive talks on Friday.

Official negotiations, aimed at forming a Fine Gael led minority Government, will resume on Monday.

Yesterday's talks have been described as brief, however Fine Gael still needs the backing of another six independents, in addition to the two who are already on board.

Four people have been arrested in Birmingham and one person held at Gatwick Airport on suspicion of terror offences.

Three men aged 26, 40 and 59 and a 29-year-old woman were held on Thursday night.

A 26-year-old man was arrested at Gatwick Airport early on Friday morning.
