It is reported at least three people have been killed by Typhoon Hagupit in the Philippines.

Homes and shops have been damaged by the storm, with nearly 900,000 people fleeing to emergency shelters.

It has caused significantly less disruption than Typhoon Haiyan last year,- which killed around 7,000 and destroyed entire towns.

Thelma Acuna is one of those who has fled. She is worried about where she will stay if the storm gets any worse.

A United Nations agency has said this operation marks one of the world's biggest peacetime evacuations.

Hagupit - Filipino for "smash" or "lash" - made landfall in the coastal town of Dolores, although yesterday weakened to a Category 3 storm - two levels below "super typhoon".

In Legazpi, a school was used as an evacuation centre for several adults and children, while makeshift homes were damaged in the city of Tacloban causing many residents to flee to storm shelters, a sports stadium and even churches.

People could be seen walking through flooded waters on a street, trying to save their belongings.

Although unlikely to reach the unprecedented strength of Typhoon Haiyan, which wrought chaos last November, Hagupit's strong winds and heavy rain are enough to threaten major damage to the impoverished region.

Daniel English is from Plan Ireland, who are coordinating a relief effort on the ground.

Trócaire Ireland have relief teams working on the ground in the Eastern Samar Province.

Julie Breen works with the charity.

She says that it is not just the physical destruction that is a concern, but the psychological damage is devastating too.
