1,027 people have been arrested in Europe's biggest-ever coordinated assault on organised crime, authorities say.

Those detained in the operation were suspected of a range of offences including people trafficking, drug smuggling and property crime.

In Ireland, gardaí say they were involved in 106 arrests overall, although figures are still being compiled and the operation is ongoing. The arrests break down to 79 arrests for crimes - including 40 for burglary offences - and 27 on warrants.

As part of the overall operation, there were 339 seizures, including drugs, cash, cigarettes and luxury cars. Raids took place at hundreds of locations in the European Union, including airports, border-crossing points, ports and specific crime hot spots in towns and cities, Europol said.

The Europe-wide operation - called Operation Archimedes - took place between the 15th and 23rd of September. Law enforcement authorities from all 28 EU Member States were involved, as well as officers from Australia, Colombia, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland and the USA.

Rob Wainwright, director of Europol, said, "Operation Archimedes is a milestone in attempts by the law enforcement community to deliver concerted action against organised crime groups in Europe.

"The scale of the operation is unprecedented and the outcome, with over 1,000 arrests made across Europe, a reminder to even the most serious criminal groups that the international law enforcement community is determined to combat their illegal activities," he added.

Europol has shared the following infographic which provides a breakdown of the arrests and seizures:
