The Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has criticised the way the 31st Dáil was adjourned this morning.

"I thought I'd get an opportunity to pay tribute to Seamus Kirk, Michael Kitt and John Browne from Wexford - people who have served long and given very distinguished service" he told Newstalk Lunchtime.

He was refering to earlier this morning, when Taoiseach Enda Kenny made a brief speech to adjourn the Dáil before going to Áras an Uachtaráin to have it dissolved.

It had been expected that the opposition parties may have been given time to speak.

"The Taoiseach just made a speech and ran out of the House - I think it just didn't look well in terms of the national parliament conducting its business", Mr Martin said.

While speaking following his party's general election campaign launch, Mr Martin said: "People passed their verdict on the last government in the 2011 election - people are very focused on the needs of the future".

He says the housing and homeless crisis "happened on this government's watch".

"The last government - despite the crisis - built 14,000 social houses over a three year period between '07 and 2010, this government build only 1,000 houses in the last five years".

"And if only build a thousand houses in five years you're going to have a housing crisis".
