The German Chancellor says Ireland is a “shining example” of how the European Union will emerge from the financial crisis.

However after a meeting with the Taoiseach in Berlin today Angela Merkel said it would be up to Eurozone Finance Ministers to make Irish debt more manageable.

The subject of an Irish bank debt deal was not strictly on the agenda for talks between Enda Kenny and Angela Merkel today.

But both leaders spoke about it after the meeting.

Awaiting outcome of talks

Mrs. Merkel said it would be up to Eurozone Finance Ministers to address the question of what might be done to improve the sustainability of Irish sovereign debt.

She said we would have to wait and see the outcome of talks between the Finance Ministers but she also described Ireland as a shining example of how the EU will emerge from crisis stronger than when it went in.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the German Chancellor had reaffirmed the Irish special case for a bank debt deal and said more clarity on how our position could be improved would be helpful.
