A number of refugees living in the so-called 'Jungle II' camp in Calais have received a welcome but unusual donation.

Artist Banksy has provided several shelters for residents, all constructed from the remains of his Dismaland exhibition.

After a five-week run at the site of an abandoned outdoor swimming pool in in Weston-Super-Mare in south-west England, the satirical amusement park was dismantled by volunteers and transported to France.

Timber has been cut up to make shelters, and clothes from the souvenir shop have been given away to some of the more than 6,000 people who live in the camp without basic services or facilities.

The reaction of camp residents has been grateful, if a little confused.

35-year-old Amanj Amin from Iraq now lives with his family in one of at least seven timber dwellings constructed from materials provided by Dismaland.

"Yes, I heard he is an artist. But I don't know about him," he said, speaking to NBC News

Aid organisations have highlighted conditions in the camp, where disease and violence are common, and hundreds continue to arrive each week.

During its run, only 4,000 people per-day were allowed into the Dismaland park - and tickets were sold online by touts for as much as €1,350.

Local officials say that the attraction brought 150,000 visitors to the seaside town. It is estimated that this was worth €27m to the local economy.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Banksy said the park was inspired by "those failed Christmas parks that pop up every December – where they stick some antlers on an Alsatian dog and spray fake snow on a skip."
