While six-year-old Edmonton resident Mable Tooke has been battling cancer in hospital, she’s developed a fondness for another person with radioactive blood – Spider-Man. And when given the opportunity by The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada, Mable made it clear she wanted to sling some webs and fight crime in the Alberta city.

Waking up yesterday morning to a television news report of the Edmonton police calling on the help of SpiderMable to rescue the local hockey player Andrew Ference, captain of the Edmonton Oilers, after a little disbelief and a bit of encouragement, Mable turned to her mother Lisa and said, “Let’s go!”

Pulling on her red and blue superhero disguise, SpiderMable then spent the day taking part in The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada’s biggest and most elaborate event. With help from many local police officers, Mayor Don Iveson, a few costumed heroes and villains, along with a cheering crowd, SpiderMable got to work.

Elizabeth LoPresti of the foundation said Mable’s idea may have been inspired by the case off Batkid, a five-year-old leukemia patient named Miles Scott, whose superheroics in San Francisco in 2013 turned him into a household name around the world.

Getting driven around the city to officially get her mission briefing from the mayor, zip lining through a waterpark, and rescuing the Black Cat and the hockey star, SpiderMable told an a rapturous crowd that the whole day was “pretty cool”, but a little tiring.

The six-year-old was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2013, and has since been receiving chemotherapy. Nearing the end of her treatment, with a positive prognosis, The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada was able to give her a much-needed day to boost her mood.

“She’s getting close to the end of her treatment. It’s become such an incredible drag,” her mother said.

SpiderMable’s adventures became a huge news story in Canada, with Tooke receiving countless messages of support, including from Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau, leader of the opposition, who are both on the campaign trail ahead of the country’s general election on October 19th.
