A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for strangling a woman to death at her home in Rathmines in Dublin over 20 years ago.

Foul play was not suspected until Howard Kelly - of The Osprey apartments in Naas, Co Kildare - came forward last year and confessed to her murder.

Margaret Seery, also known as Margot, was found lying face-down on the bed of her apartment at Kenilworth Square in Rathmines in October 1994.

An inquest concluded she had choked to death after a night out, and she was returned to her hometown of Rathkeale in Co Limerick to be buried.

19 years and nine months later, Howard Kelly walked into Rathmines garda station where he admitted strangling her with his bare hands in "a totally unprovoked assault".

Today, the 41-year-old pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison.

A victim impact statement on behalf of Margot's only child, Niamh, spoke of the anger she felt that her mum was an "irresponsible parent".

That anger is now gone, she said, and she is actually grateful Howard Kelly came forward.

Margot's brother, Pa Guinane, made a brief statement outside court.
