Ireland has just come out of the wettest March recorded for up to eight years. That is according to the average rainfall levels recorded at Met Éireann weather stations around the country.

March 20th was the wettest day, when nearly one-quarter of the month's total rain fell. That day, stations at Knock Airport and Claremorris reported 21.4 millimetres and 22.3 millimetres respectively - and their wettest March day since 2007.

Long-Term Average (LTA) rainfall values ranged from 69% at Finner - with 71.8 millimetres - to 128% at Roche's Point with 100.7 millimetres.

The month's highest daily rainfall was recorded at Drummin, Co. Mayo on the 19th with 45.2 millimetres. While the number of wet days ranged from 11 at Casement Aerodrome to 20 at both Finner and Belmullet.

Average temperatures were mainly on or above their LTA - except at some coastal stations in the West and South-west.

Differences in temperatures ranged from -5°C at Markree to +6°C at Phoenix Park - with mean temperatures going between 5.8°C at Knock Airport and 8.3°C at Sherkin Island.

The sunniest days were recorded on the 11th and 12th, with the highest amount of daily sunshine seen at Belmullet on the 11th. But the number of dull days (less than five hours of sunshine) ranged from six days at Dublin Airport, to 11 days in Belmullet.

And to top it all off, ground frost was recorded on over two-thirds of the days - with Athenry seeing the highest amount at 22 days.
