From Lord of the Rings tours in New Zealand to the Harry Potter Studio Tour in London, TV and film tourism has become a significant industry. Fans love the opportunity to visit the places and sets where their favourite shows and films were shot - even if in many cases they are barely recognisable with the CG removed or the cinematic dressings long since torn down. It can be a big boost to the local economy, too.
On The Right Hook today, Shane Coleman wchatted with travel writer Pól Ó Conghaile about the rise of TV tourism. What is the draw of these locations, and what are some of the most memorable and worthwhile places to visit?
Ireland has played host to numerous significant productions over the years, for many reasons. We have impressive landscapes, plenty of historical locations, and some well-regarded film studios. Period pieces in particular often choose Ireland as their base of operations. And over the last few years, some high profile television productions have been shot in the Republic and the North - including Game of Thrones, Vikings and The Tudors.
We've put together a map of 15 film and TV locations around the island of Ireland that cinephiles and TV fans might consider visiting. Let us know if you've been to any of the spots, and if you thought they were worth visiting. Anywhere else you'd recommend?
