A search is underway for a gunman after a 41-year-old man was shot and injured in Cork last night.

It happened in the Chapelgate area of Ballyvolane on the north side of Cork city at around 7:40pm.

It's believed the gunman fled the scene on foot following the shooting.

The injured man was treated at the scene before being taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, where his condition is described as stable.

Meanwhile, the scene of the shooting has been persevered for a technical examination.

No arrests have been yet been made, and gardaí say their enquiries are ongoing.

Anybody who was in the area between 7pm and 7:45pm yesterday evening is being asked to contact Mayfield Garda Station 021-4558510 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.
