Local Councillor Mick Duff lives not far from the house. He told Newstalk the local community is shaken.

“At about 9:30pm last night, news broke that there had been a very serious incident in the parish and just about 500mtrs away from where I am living.

There was just a complete sense of shock to pass by a local house with the crime scene tape around it and the garda car parked beside it brings home the reality of this appalling tragedy in our community.”

He said it is a major tragedy so close to Christmas.

“I mean the thought struck me this morning, we will have children and families passing by the home now this morning on their way into the local schools,” he said.

“People at this time of year now the excitement of Christmas coming and for such a tragedy to take place is just appalling. It’s very, very hard to comprehend.”

The Garda investigation is ongoing.
