A man is in a critical condition in hospital following a single car crash in Co Westmeath overnight.

The man who is aged in his 20s was seriously injured when his car hit a ditch on the R195 near Castlepollard shortly after 3 o'clock this morning.

He was taken by ambulance to Mullingar Hospital for treatment.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses and the road has been closed for a technical examination.
