Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a Westmeath road crash in which a man died.

A 39-year-old man was seriously injured when the car he was driving collided with a pickup truck on the N55 at Tubberclare near Glasson.

It happened at around 5:30pm on Friday.

He was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore.

However he was pronounced dead a short time later.

He was the only person in the car.

The male driver, aged in his 20s, and teenager passenger in the pick-up truck sustained minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

The crash sites and vehicles involved were examined by Garda forensic collision investigators.

The local coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination has been arranged.
