A man has been arrested by gardaí over an aggravated burglary in Co. Waterford in the early hours of this morning.

Gardaí responding to a call about suspicious activity were patrolling the Abbeyside area and received a call about a burglary in progress.

They then spotted a man (20) armed with a hatchet - who they disarmed and arrested.

He was taken to Dungarvan garda station where he is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

It followed reports that a man armed with a hatchet threatened people in a house in the area, and stole cash and mobile phones.
