A man has appeared in court charged in connection with an arson attack on a house in Waterford city, which has left two children with severe burns.

23-year-old Gregory Hennessy, of 66 Priory Lawn, Waterford has been charged with reckless endangerment and criminal damage.

Detective Sergeant Siobhan Keating told the court he made no reply to either of the charges.

11-year-old Roisin Halligan and her one-year-old cousin Lexi Halligan were left injured when a petrol bomb was thrown through a window of their grandmother's home in Ballybeg on Thursday night.

Their three-month-old cousin, who was asleep upstairs, was also treated for smoke inhalation, but has since been discharged from hospital.

Mr Hennessy has been granted free legal aid and there was no application for bail

He was remanded in custody to appear again in court next week.
