The body has been taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where a postmortem will take place soon.

A forensic examination of the scene at Buncrana Pier and Swilly Road took place yesterday and all roads have now reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to contact them.

They are particularly interested in anyone who was travelling near Buncrana Pier, Swilly Road and Shore Front between 6.30am and 7.30am on Sunday morning.

In 2016, five people also died at Buncrana Pier after their car fell into the sea.

Sean McGrotty (49), his children Mark (12) and Evan (8), mother-in-law Ruth Daniels and sister-in-law Jodie Lee Daniels (14) died when his car slid on algae and slipped into the sea.

An infant, Rioghnach-Ann, was the sole survivor of the incident.
