Gardaí are appealing for information after a man aged in his 60s was shot dead in Co Mayo.
It happened in Aghamore, Ballyhaunis just before midnight on Tuesday night.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man in his 80s has been arrested in connection with the shooting and remains in custody at Castlebar Garda station.
Gardaí believe he heard noises outside his home and went to investigate, before firing off a number of warning shots to warn off any potential intruders.
The man in his 60s was hit and died at the scene. The pair were neighbours and they were known to each other.
The body of the dead man has been removed to Mayo University Hospital, where a post mortem is expected to be completed later.
The scene is being examined by investigators from the Garda Technical Bureau.
