A 20-year-old man has been killed overnight in a road traffic collision in Roscommon.

The young man suffered serious injuries when the car he was travelling in as a passenger left the road and struck a ditch just after midnight.

He was taken to Sligo University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A postmortem is being arranged.

The driver of the car and a second passenger both survived the crash, which happened in the Ardcarn area shortly after midnight.

The two men, aged 31 and 37, were hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination by garda forensic collision investigators.

The N4 remains open with a stop-and-go system in operation at Ardcarn close to the junction with the R285, Keadue Road.
