Gardaí say the car drove away in the direction of Gort and that it would have visible damage to the bonnet and front.

It's also believed to have a defective right rear light.

The victim was taken to University College Hospital Galway where he was pronounced dead shortly before 2am.

A post mortem will be carried out by the State Pathologist Marie Cassidy this afternoon.

The roadway at the scene has re-opened.

Gardaí at Loughrea garda station are appealing for witnesses to contact them at 091 842870.
