A man has been jailed for 13 years for the attempted murder of his heavily pregnant girlfriend.

The court heard Dean Paget, of no fixed abode, attacked her on the 25th of April 2021 out of what was described at his sentence hearing as his “misplaced jealousy.”

The 34-year-old kicked, punched, shoved, dragged and verbally abused his then girlfriend, who was 32 weeks pregnant at the time.

He initially denied it but later admitted trying to kill her when shown footage of the prolonged attack, which was harvested from several Dublin city street cameras.

The homeless couple pitched a tent on Montague Lane where the attack continued with him kicking her in the stomach and choking her.

At one point, he punched her in the face to stop her screaming. She thought she was going to die.

She later presented at the Rotunda Hospital where staff described her as being distraught and very concerned about her baby, who didn’t survive.

The judge described the attack as a “terrifying ordeal,” which was borne out of Paget’s misplaced jealousy due to intoxication.

The ending of their unborn daughter’s life was one of many aggravating factors which led to him being jailed today for thirteen years.
