At least 28 dead after tourist bus crashes on Portuguese island of Madeira

At least 28 people have died after a tourist bus overturned on the Portuguese island of Madeira, local media is reporting.

The Lusa news agency quotes the local mayor as saying 17 women and 11 men had died.

In comments translated by Reuters, Mayor Filipe Sousa told SIC TV: “I have no words to describe what happened. I cannot face the suffering of these people."

22 others are reported to have been injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

A number of the victims are said to be German.

The crash happened in the town of Canico.

Photos and videos from the scene show the bus ended up on its side after leaving the road.

Ambulances and emergency service personnel are at the scene of the crash.

Madeira is located to the southwest of the Portuguese mainland, and is a popular tourist destination with more than a million visitors every year.
