Three people have died in England following listeria infections linked to pre-packed sandwiches.

Officials say the infections affected six seriously-ill hospital patients, three of whom have died.

Sandwiches and salads linked to the cases have now been withdrawn.

The affected products were also withdrawn from hospitals when the potential links to the listeria were first identified.

The sandwich supplier - the Good Food Chain - has voluntarily chosen to cease production while an investigation is carried out.

According to health and food safety authorities, the sandwich company had been supplied with meat from a company called North Country Cooked Meats.

That firm subsequently produced a positive test result for the outbreak streak of listeria, and they - along with their distributor - have also ceased production for now.

All six cases have been in England, with no cases identified in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Dr Nick Phin from Public Health England explained: "Our thoughts are with the families of those patients who have sadly died.

"We, along with the FSA, colleagues in local authorities and the NHS have worked quickly to determine the likely cause of this outbreak and taken action to reduce the risk to the public’s health.

"To date, there have been no associated cases identified outside healthcare organisations, and any risk to the public is low."

Due to the low risk to the public, people in the UK are being urged to only seek medical attention if they develop symptoms.

Listeria infections are rare, and for healthy people usually goes unnoticed or causes only very mild illness.

However, for others it can have serious consequences - particularly for people with pre-existing health conditions or pregnant women.
